One of the earliest Christian coins, this issue of Constantine the Great shows the emperor with his gaze directed upward in the rare “Eyes to Heaven” portrait type. It is among the first and most famous depictions of Christian influence on imperial coinage.

As his contemporary Bishop Eusebius wrote, Constantine was portrayed “looking upwards in the manner of one reaching out to God in prayer,” reflecting his divinely inspired faith.

Struck at the Heraclea mint between A.D. 327–329, likely by artisans from Ticinium - an early center of Christian imagery - this bronze nummus measures 19 mm and weighs 3.20 g.
